Part-10: When the Earth Wept – The Prophet’s ﷺ Passing
When the Earth Wept – The Prophet’s ﷺ Passing
“You will follow me to my grave, one by one.” – Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
🌅 A Morning Unlike Any Other
On Monday, the 12th of Rabi al-Awwal, in the 11th year after Hijrah, something in Madinah felt different. The air, usually warm with peace and the rhythms of prophetic life, carried a heaviness that even the birds seemed to feel. In the home of Aisha (RA), the most beloved wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, time slowed down.
For nearly two weeks, the Prophet ﷺ had been battling a severe illness. He experienced waves of fever, weakness, and headaches so intense that he would sometimes faint. Yet even in such suffering, he never ceased to lead, teach, or comfort.
🕌 His Final Public Appearance
Just a few days before his passing, the Prophet ﷺ came out to the mosque. Supported by Ali (RA) and Abbas (RA), he moved slowly, wrapped in a cloth, each step taking immense strength. Yet, when the curtain lifted, and the companions saw him smiling – a gentle, approving smile – relief washed over the congregation.
This brief appearance became a moment of hope. Many thought he was recovering. But it was not to be. That radiant smile would be the last glimpse of the Prophet ﷺ for most of his companions.
🕊️ The Moment of Passing: A Whisper Between the Worlds
The Prophet ﷺ lay with his head gently resting on Aisha’s (RA) chest. She later recalled that he raised his hands toward the sky and softly said:
“With the highest companions… With the highest companions…”
As his strength faded, he looked up and smiled. Then, his noble soul left this world — gently, silently. The greatest man to walk the earth had returned to his Lord.
The earth shook — not physically, but spiritually. A wave of sorrow swept through Madinah like a storm. The sun seemed dimmer, the sky quieter. The streets fell silent.
💔 Madinah in Shock: Denial and Grief
The news reached the mosque quickly. People began to gather, uncertain and afraid. Some refused to believe it. Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), known for his strength and resolve, drew his sword and declared:
“By Allah, the Prophet ﷺ has not died! He has gone to his Lord as Musa (AS) did and will return!”
It was not arrogance. It was heartbreak.
Then came Abu Bakr (RA). He had been in his own house on the outskirts of Madinah. Upon hearing the devastating news, he rushed to Aisha’s (RA) room. Uncovering the noble face of the Prophet ﷺ, he leaned in, kissed him, and wept.
“You are pure in life and death,” he whispered.
Stepping into the mosque, he gently calmed the storm of grief. With firm yet trembling words, he recited the verse:
“Muhammad is no more than a messenger; many were the messengers who passed away before him…”(Surah Aal-Imran, 3:144)
The companions wept. Reality struck. Their beloved Prophet ﷺ had truly passed away.
📜 The Legacy Left Behind: Not Just a Man, But a Mission
The Prophet ﷺ did not just leave a family or followers. He left behind a way of life, a complete deen (religion), and a global brotherhood of faith. From his last sermon at Arafat to his personal conversations with his companions, his legacy was clear:
-
Monotheism (Tawheed) must remain at the heart of every soul.
-
Justice, mercy, and accountability are the pillars of leadership.
-
Women’s rights, orphans’ care, and fair trade are non-negotiable.
-
The Ummah must remain united.
His words were few in his final days, but they echoed with eternal meaning:
“Do not make my grave a site of worship…”“Take care of your prayers…”“Be good to those under your authority…”“Fear Allah regarding the women…”
He knew he was leaving. But he also knew he was leaving behind a torch – to be carried by hearts that believed.
🧩 Preparing the Burial: A Painful Duty
For a while, no one could bring themselves to begin the burial. How could they? How does one lay to rest the mercy to mankind?
Eventually, Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA), the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet ﷺ, took charge. Along with a few others, he bathed the body of the Prophet ﷺ. The room was filled with tears, durood, and silence.
He was buried exactly where he had passed away – in the room of Aisha (RA), now the most honored ground on earth.
🧭 The Ummah’s First Test: Who Will Lead?
As the Prophet ﷺ had not appointed a successor by name, the companions quickly convened in Saqifah Banu Sa’idah to prevent division. After much deliberation and mutual consultation, Abu Bakr (RA) was chosen as the first Caliph.
It was not a political choice. It was a moral and spiritual decision. Abu Bakr (RA) had stood beside the Prophet ﷺ from the beginning — in the cave, in battle, in tears, in prayer.
In his first address as Caliph, he said:
“O people! I have been appointed over you, though I am not the best among you…”“If I do well, help me; if I err, correct me...”
The torch was passed – not just of leadership, but of trust.
📚 The Human Side of a Divine Mission
The Prophet ﷺ wept for his Ummah. He smiled at his enemies. He bled in Ta’if. He buried his own children. He prayed alone in the night when the world slept.
His death was not just the passing of a man, but the closing of prophethood, the end of divine revelation, and the opening of an age of responsibility.
Every tear shed that day in Madinah was not just sorrow. It was love. Every shaking hand was not just grief. It was honor.
✨ Miracles That Followed His Passing
Despite his physical absence, signs surrounded his departure:
-
The room filled with fragrance during the burial.
-
The peace and calm that enveloped Madinah after the burial prayer.
-
Dreams and visions among the companions of him smiling, reassured.
And the greatest sign: Islam continued to spread. His message did not end with him — because it was never just his. It was Allah’s message, delivered by His most beloved.
🕯️ Eternal Lessons from the Prophet’s ﷺ Death
-
Even the best must leave – No one is eternal in this world.
-
Grief is part of faith – Even Umar (RA) broke down. Islam teaches balance in mourning.
-

The message is greater than the messenger – Islam is timeless.
